In the UK in 2021, 76% of white people were employed, compared to 67% of people from all other ethnic groups combined (GOV.UK).

Only 47% of managers feel prepared to have conversations about race with employees (Gallup).

The Intercultural Development Inventory (IDI) is a widely used tool to assess individuals’ and groups’ mindset toward cultural differences and similarities.

Sometimes our teams feel the divide of the global north vs the global south; roles, benefits and relationships between expat and local staff can result in tensions.

Hurried orientation of expats to the local context can result in cultural faux pas which in certain contexts can constitute an organisational risk.

Poorly supported mobility can cause significant stress.

Some historical divisions have not been adressed and extend their influence into the present.

Working in international organisations requires all members to adjust their native culture to that of the organisation - sometimes this culture is not clearly articulated, socialised and fostered, causing imbalance and frustrations.

Living in a ‘global village’ means that we are regularly engaging with people with different beliefs, customs and habits.

As we each wear our culture like our skin, we are often unaware of it until we experience tension or conflict.

We can become more culturally aware and sensitive, learn tact and respect, confront our biases and learn how to more intentionally leverage our cultural differences as advantage.
